education is a community effort

We know that if we give our all and ask the same of our students, we can change the world. One graduate at a time.

We are closely monitoring the latest information and updates from state, local, and school officials regarding the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). With the safety and interest of our supporters and staff in mind, our spring events have been postponed and all By Degrees team members are working from home.

Sweet Dreams 2020

Over the last 13 years, our annual Sweet Dreams event has raised nearly one million dollars to support the college and career dreams of our students.

This year will be our 14th annual event, and we need your support now more than ever. Be on the lookout for more information about Sweet Dreams 2020 in the next few weeks!

Bingo & Beer with AMA Iowa

This year's Bingo and Beer Benefiting By Degrees event, hosted by our friends at AMA Iowa, has moved to a virtual BINGO experience!

Join us on Friday, June 12, for a fun evening of BINGO from your living room, and the chance to win prizes from local businesses!

A $5 ticket includes access to the virtual event and 5 BINGO cards. Learn more at the event page, or visit

The By Degrees Team

Our physical office and schools may be closed, but our team is hard at work. We are focused on assisting school staff and students with needs as they arise and continue to plan our postsecondary and career programing for when school resumes.

As a Des Moines-based nonprofit with a small but mighty team, we rely on the donations of our local community to remain a strong and consistent presence in our schools and students’ lives. In times like these, your support makes our continued work possible.

Should we make additional changes or announcements, we will share those updates on our website and social media channels.

Thank you for remaining a steadfast supporter of our work, and for being part of the By Degrees difference.

Located on Des Moines' northeast side, Findley Elementary School serves over 340 kindergarten to fifth grade students.

Our Findley Elementary students matriculate into Harding Middle, one of Iowa's largest and most diverse middle schools. All Harding students benefit from our programing.

Through our original cohort model, we adopted the first grade class at Des Moines' King Elementary School in 2006. These students graduated from high school in spring 2018.

We recognize the transformational impact incremental changes can make on a student’s life. Partnering with entire schools, we work to increase high school graduation and postsecondary readiness rates while engaging community partnerships to uplift students, families, and whole neighborhoods.
